Hellevoetsluis The versatility of the surrounding area is also reflected in Hellevoetsluis. New are the beautiful built residential areas, the partially covered shopping centre and the large recreation parks. But next to the pleasures of modern times, the glorious history is tangibly present. Even when you are only sitting on the large terrace in the harbour, you cannot escape the past. The old fortress was built in the 17th century, as a war and trading harbour. To strengthen the fortress, Jan Blanken constructed a sea lock and the first dry dock made out of stone. Hellevoetsluis was also a naval harbour. In these days, the Zilvervloot, the treasure the fleet of Piet Heyn conquered on the Spanish fleet, came ashore here. The Tromp Huys, the dry dock built by Jan Blanken, the Ruyterhuys, named after Michiel de Ruyter, and the Kruyt Huys are just a few of the places of interest in the fortress. The fortress also houses many fancy bars and restaurants.
